I really enjoyed this story of one of the "Filles du Roy", also known as the King's daughters, a group of young girls (usually orphans) and women between the ages of 12 and 35 who were sponsored by King Louis XIV and sent with a dowry to New France to become wives to the men who had already settled there.

Laure Beausejour, who had dreams of becoming a seamstress, is an expert lace maker, someone who could have made her fortune if she had stayed in Paris. However, she is chosen as one of the King's Daughters and sent to New France. Unsuited and unprepared for the very difficult life during the beginning of French colonization, she is sent to the very edges of the colony and married to a brutal trapper who seems more attracted to her looks than anything else. Left alone for months during a terrible winter without any knowledge of how to survive in the wilderness, she learns to rely on an Iroquois warrior who helps her survive.

I think this book had a lot of promise despite a few loose ends. Laure is a very intriguing character and, I for one would like to read a follow-up to Laure's life in New France.

Wished there was more about being in Canada
A history lesson told through a fictitious venue. Les Filles du Roi have always been a source of curiosity and admiration. If you share the same curiosity I recommend this book.
This historical fiction account of the life that one of the King's Daughters may have lived, will be of interest to those eager for details about this group of women from 1663-1673. Since so many have sprung from that group of courageous women...myself included...there should be considerable interest in this type of supposition. I was a little let down by the ending, but heartened when the author remarked in the literary guide that she was entertaining the possibility of a sequel. A good story!
My opinion was although it was fiction, it was suppose to have been based on the actual time period when New France was undergoing settlement. Too much was written about the romance between a Kings Daughter and a native. Highly unlikely although there were "romances" between the fur traders and the native women which produced children. Disappointed in the book.
I don't read much historical fiction, but this book had special meaning for me as there are several fille du roi in my family's history. I admit to not really appreciating how difficult their lives were and how much they might have endured in coming to a very different new world. Nd. Desrochers has weaved a fascinating take I will not soon forget.
I loved this book because the heroine was a young woman hardened by her experiences and not really nice at all. The title made me fear this novel was going to be a romance. Far from it! As far as I can tell, it was well researched and it realistically described the hardships these young women faced in France and the even harder life that awaited most of them in Canada. .
I read this book on recommendation of my sister (a retired librarian). The both of us are very much into genealogic studies and have many relatives who came to New France (Canada) from France in the 1600's and 1700's to populate the country for the King of France so he could show the rest of the world how vested he was in this "new land". Even though it's a fiction novel, it seemed very much based on the facts of that time in history. It gives real insight into what sorts of everyday lives one's relatives of that time were going through on both sides of the Atlantic. Hard times. This book along with "The Voyageur" by Grace Lee Nute put a clear picture in one's mind of what your relatives were up to and perhaps shed light on why it is so difficult to trace your lineage when the French and the First Nation Peoples slept with one another perhaps as part of a fur trade deal or just to keep warm, not necessarily thinking of a wife as someone to "be true" to. When tracing genealogic roots in slavery of the United States many times you can go so far and then you can go no further. Cruel but true. It is somewhat like this in Canada when people were married "in the fashion of the country". Only the priests kept records and they often changed the names of individuals. And they certainly kept no records on anyone not willing to convert to catholocism. I liked this book because it is very pertinent to my personal family history and probably a lot closer to fact than fiction.
