Seeing Mary edition by Brenda Beausoleil Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Seeing Mary is a beautifully crafted fictional novel by Brenda Beausoleil. The prose flows so perfectly it is a pleasure to read for that reason alone. However, that would not do justice to the novel as a complete work of art.
I was captivated by the writing from the beginning
"She is an alchemist.
She creates potions in the modern world to soothe demons. They come to her with anxiety, panic, mania, and voices only they can hear. With pharmacological wizardry, she creates a balm in the form of tiny capsules to ease their terror and dismay. It is her gift, she believes."
This narrative is about the main character, Dr. Jane Norton, one of the top psychiatrists in the country. She is on sabbatical following the death of her mother, when she receives a phone call from a former friend begging her to return to her hometown and help the small town deal with the doctor's best friend, Charlotte "Charlie" Price. Jane agrees to help Charlie, even though she was not informed what was going on with her. Expecting only a one- to two-day trip, she is drawn in to a much more complicated stay and situation than she had planned. Charlie has claimed to repeatedly see Mary, the Holy mother, which has caused problems for her friends, her workplace, the Catholic Church, as well as other churches in the town, and even the city government. Now it has become a problem for Jane, who has to decide what is best for her long-time friend.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Seeing Mary. It is a novel that stays with you long after you have finished the story. While it is a tale of friendship, Beausoleil reveals notable insights regarding people, society, churches/church leaders, and death/mourning, just to name a few. Seeing Mary is a novel which may open your eyes to your own life, causing you to see what is really important. I highly recommend this book!
