This is a beautiful collection of creative, raw, honest poetry with a dash of whimsy and hope here and there. Recommended to dreamers.
Let me start out by saying that Miguel Flores' poetry is something fresh. Yet, although it is unique, it is also firmly planted in the postmodernist tradition. It exudes a kind of peaceful resignation that postmodernism often lacks, an acknowledgement of the brokenness of this world with the quiet determination that there is a better way, a way that includes the brokenness. It's diverse, it's beautiful, and it is complex. One reading is not enough, and for some poems, you will still be finding new ideas after reviewing them a dozen times.
This collection is deceptively brief. Though volume is relatively short, it is not quick. In order to understand, Flores' poetry takes slow, careful reading. Each poem deserves to be savored, and they are diverse enough for variation. Some of them are short and simple; some are longer and more constrained by traditional forms. Though they share a similar aesthetic, the poems of this collection explore nuance, like a good shot of espresso. Some of them are quick and strong, like the first sip; some of them are light, like espresso foam; and some of them take time to develop into a rich flavor, like the aftertaste of a good shot at a gourmet coffee shop.
It is possible to eat of this garden with the pace of a starving man, but these poems deserve the light touch of an artist. Take "A Head Full of Flowers" one bite at a time.
